20 REASONS TO CELEBRATE
- Health is a universal right guaranteed in the Federal Constitution and SUS
- The participative health management congregates 77 thousand councilors
and integrates networks and social movements.
- Brazil has eradicated poliomyelitis and measles.
- Brazil has the biggest health system guided by the basic attention and was recognized as an example by the World Health Organization in 2008.
- The infant mortality reduced by 60% in from 1990 to 2008.
- SUS performs 75% of the high complex health care, which corresponds to 12 million hospitalizations, 215 thousand heart surgeries and 9 million chemotherapy and radiotherapy procedures in 2007.
- Brazilians live more: the life expectancy increases to 72.3 years.
- Brazil is internationally recognized for the Aids, vaccination, tabagism, human milk bank, transplants, cancer and basic attention programs.
- The private health system is regulated by the National Supplementary Health Agency(ANS) in defense of consumer rights and the quality of the services.
- There are public policies for children, adolescents, women, men, elderly, the disabled, black population, indigenous population, LGBT, quilombo and ribeirinha communities, field and city works, gypsies, people with mental disorders, prostitutes, street people
and prisoners.
- SUS operates with social networks and, in partnership, implements STD and Aids programs, reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and attention to violence victims, among others.
- With anti-tabagism actions, the prevalence of smokers in Brazil fell from 34% in 1989 to 16% in 2006.
- The health prevention has a broad vaccination program for children, youths, adults and the elderly.
- The health surveillance operates in the entire country, including at the ports, airports and borders, with services and inspection in the quality of drugs and foods.
- The Smiling Brazil Program attends to 84 million people, which represents an increase of 300% in the coverage in the last 5 years.
- To attend to the population that requires transplants, Brazil has a bank with 750 thousand voluntary bone marrow donors and the Brazilian Umbilical Cord and Placenta Blood Bank Network.
- Expansion of pharmaceutical health care with the supply of essential and antiretroviral drugs, and initiatives as the Popular Pharmacy Program of Brazil, policy of generic drugs and sale of fractioned drug.
- In 2003, SUS created the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU), which has a cover of 101 million people.
- Act no. 10.216/2001 implements the Mental Health Policy, which gradually deactivated the asylum system. The Psychosocial Attention Centers and other forms of health care are implemented for people with mental disorders.
- Qualification of the workforce
with the training of community health agents; with Profae, for
the education of nursing professionals; with the Telssaude for Family Health Staffs; with
the Pro-Health, for the reorientation of the graduation courses; and other initiatives for the training of technicians and auxiliaries in various areas.
