Before and after

Before 1988, the service of the public hospitals was restricted to 30 million brazilians. With the Constitution of 1988, over 70 million people had the right to health care through the Unified Health System.

Before 1988:

• The public health system attended to those who contributed to Social Security. Those who had no money had to depend on charity and philanthropy.
• Centralized and of federal responsibility, without the participation of the users.
• Medical-hospital health care.
• Health is the absence of diseases.
• 30 million people with access to hospital services.

2008:

• The public health system is for all, without discrimination. Right from gestation and for all life time the full health care is a right.
• Decentralization, municipalization and participative with 77 thousand health advisors.
• Promotion, protection, recovery and rehabilitation.
• Health and quality of life.
• 140 million people have their only access to health services at SUS.

SUS benefits over 190 million Brazilians

100% public:

Health, sanitary and environmental surveillance, Registration and inspection of drugs, Pharmaceutical care, Basic attention, Distribution of essential and antiretroviral drugs, Health regulation, Blood bank, And much more…

20% private, 80% public:

The public hospital services have 5,900 accredited hospitals (public, private and philanthropic) and 64 thousand primary units. The health plans and private service attend 38 million people, however, it is SUS that performs 75% of the high complex procedures in the country.
