The therapeutic residence services, also known as Therapeutic Residences, are homes destined for people with mental disorders that remain under psychiatric confinement for long periods of time, and are unable to return to their families.
Therapeutic residences were founded under governmental Decree/GM nº 106 in February 2000 and are an essential part of the mental health policy of the Ministry of Health. The mechanisms are vital within the scope of the Sistema Único de Saúde/SUS ’s. It’s an essential part of the deinstitutionalization and social reinsertion process of egresses from psychiatric hospitals.
Such homes are kept with financial resources previously meant for psychiatric wards. As a result, for every resident of the psychiatric hospital that is transferred to the therapeutic residence, an equal number of psychiatric wards should be disengaged from SUS. The financial resources that were paid for should be relocated to the financial funds of the state or the county for the maintenance of the therapeutic residence Services.
There are more than 470 therapeutic residences in Brazil.
