The Therapeutic Residences Services

These services also known as Therapeutic Residences are residential homes for people with mental disorders who due to their confinement for a long period of time in psychiatric institutions could not go back to their original families.

The Therapeutic Residences were created by Decree GM 106 dated February 2000 and are an essential part of the Ministry of Health Mental Health Policy Sector. They are under the SUS supervision and are responsible for the social reintegration process of patients leaving psychiatric hospitals.

The financial resources supporting these homes are the ones previously used for psychiatric wards. So, when patients are transferred from a psychiatric hospital to therapeutic residences, SUS stop paying the equal number of psychiatric beds and financial resources are transferred to the state or city for the maintenance of the Therapeutic Residence Services.

There are more than 470 therapeutic residences all over the country.
